---------------------------------------------------------------------
CHAT enables you to talk with a subscriber currently connected to THE
SOURCE. Everything you type will appear on his or her screen and
vice-versa.
To use this real-time method of communication, type CHAT followed by
the account number of the person you wish to speak with. (To select
an account number at random, or to see if the subscriber you want to
contact is available, type ONLINE at Command Level.) If they aren't
using THE SOURCE at the time, or if they have blocked CHAT calls,
you'll receive a message to that effect. Otherwise, the message, CHAT
FROM and your account number will appear on their screen, followed by
whatever greeting you type.
To respond to a CHAT call, which will appear on your screen as follows:
** CHAT FROM TCA123 **
Hi, care to chat for a moment?
you must first BREAK from what you are involved in, and at Command Level,
type:
-> CHAT TCA123
and at the "Enter message" prompt, begin typing your response. When you
complete your message, press RETURN two or three times, signaling the
other person to respond. (If you do NOT wish to respond to a chat call,
simply ignore the call; the caller cannot establish a connection without
the correct responses from you.)
Do not exceed 80 characters per line before pressing RETURN. When you
want to end a CHAT, use CONTROL P or ESCAPE to return to Command Level
(TRS-80 users should use the "Shift Arrow Up" key).
If you do not wish to be interrupted by CHAT calls while using THE
SOURCE, type CHAT -OFF at Command Level after you sign on. Type CHAT -ON
to be available for calls again. (You must type CHAT -OFF each time you
sign on - or you may enter this command in a C_ID file that automatically
executes your commands when you sign on. See page 282 of THE SOURCE Users
Manual for an explanation of C_ID files.)
